シューラ・チェルカスキー
1909年（1911年説もある）、ウクライナ（旧ソ連）のオデッサ生まれのピアニスト。1995年12月27日ロンドンにて没。1923年にアメリカへ移住し、各地で演奏して神童の名をほしいままにする。その後、カーティス音楽院で名教師ヨーゼフ・ホフマンに師事し、19世紀的ロマン主義の演奏スタイルを継承するピアニストとして名声を確立する。しかし、第2次大戦後、アメリカでは「時代遅れな演奏」との批判が高まり、活動の場をヨーロッパに移す。とりわけイギリスでは、その美しい音色や色彩感は賞賛をもって迎えられ、再び評価は高まった。晩年まで精力的に演奏活動を続け、広いレパートリーの中でもショパン演奏は絶賛されていた。
