1977年デビュー。アンディ・パートリッジを中心に英国スウィンドルで結成。シニカルな視点とヒネたポップ感覚でパンク全盛期のなか、際立つ存在感をしめす。その後も『ブラック・シー』『イングリッシュ・セトゥルメント』などの傑作を発表し、80年代のビートルズと評される。また、80年代中盤にはデュークス・オブ・ストラトスフィア名義で60年代サイケ・ロックへのオマージュともいえる2枚のアルバムを発表し、話題を呼ぶ。
