Paul Tortelier
1914年3月21日、パリ生まれのチェロ奏者。1990年12月18日パリにて没。パリ音楽院でチェロをジェラール・エッカンに師事、作曲と和声も学ぶ。カザルスの下でその後も研鑚を積み、1937年、R.シュトラウスの「ドン・キホーテ」の独奏者に抜擢され、フランスを代表するチェロ奏者として世界に認められる。1947年からソリストとして活躍を開始。指揮者としても1956年にデビューして以来、欧州各地のオーケストラに客演し、好評を得ている。また、作曲家としても、多くの作品を残している。一方、1957年からはパリ音楽院で教鞭を執り、多くの優秀な演奏家を世に出した。長男ヤン・パスカルはヴァイオリニスト、長女マリア・ド・ラ・ポーはピアニスト、次女のロマーナはチェリストという音楽一家で、彼は子供たちと室内楽を演奏するのを無上の喜びとしていた。
