1961年カナダ出身。大学在学中に伝説のカントリー・シンガー、パッツィ・クラインに傾倒し、カントリー・シンガーとしてのキャリアを積む。80年代後半までにはその世界ではかなりの有望株として大いに注目されるが、92年にレズビアンであることを公言し、大胆なポップ・アプローチを展開した『アンジャニュウ』が200万枚を超えるヒットを記録したことでカントリーからの脱皮を図る。以後も同路線で絶大な支持を得続けている。
